The loan may also be for a family member. In any case, the women are always the ones whom the loan goes through. Getting access to money, gives women more say in the family.

Mahila Mandals are the Key

Mahila mandals (women’s goups) are at the centre of the development process for Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development (CORD) based in Himachal Pradesh. From the women’s groups all other programs evolve – self help groups, income generation, health and sanitation, early child development, youth groups, promotion of organic farming, participation in local politics, etc.

After the severe flood of 2004 in Bangladesh, the poorest people in affected communities near Ghaibanda were given seeds and fertilizer after their crops were completely washed away. The crop was good, even the crop two years later.

Garo women (Tribal group straddling the India and Bangladesh border) came to meet us to talk about the relief effort and the food they revceived from Canada after the devastating 2004 flood.

The Garo people lost most of their ancestral land in Bangladesh when they flew to India during the independence war. When they returned, Bangladeshi had taken their land. They are now landless, despite being the original occupants of Bangladesh.
